Nintendo announced that Mario Kart Wii will use a "Mario Kart Channel" that, like the Wii Fit Channel, stays accessible from the Wii Menu even when the disc is not in the drive. You can use this Channel to view and download ghost data of other players and race against them (presumably you'll need the disc for the racing parts). Nintendo has released additional information about this Channel which reveals just how useful and smart their detached Channels can be.
The Channel lets you register friends and check their online status (awesome),...

A US soldier discovered his missus had been playing away at home after spotting a suspicious "Mii" on his Nintendo Wii, the Evening Standard reports.
The man, known only as Tony, returned from a year in Iraq to reports from chums that his wife had been cheating on him. He'd had the Wii for company while on service in Iraq, but had mailed it back to the States prior to his return.
His other half claimed she'd only kissed the suspect, a professional bowler, once, but the Wii said otherwise... Tony realized that the offending Mii was...

All those Wii and DS profits must have been burning a hole in Nintendo's pocket, because they went developer shopping and picked up Monolith Soft, effective May 1st, 80% of Monolith — creator of Xenosaga & Baten Kaitos — will be transfered from Namco Bandai to the Big N.
As reason for the move, the firm cited considerations involving the future growth of the Monolith studio and the desire to strengthen its relationship with Nintendo in the console software business.

None of the console manufacturers is particularly enamored of mod chips, but it seems rare for one of them to talk about them directly. Nintendo is bucking that trend with a recent notice on their European site. It's pretty straightforward:
Perhaps you are not familiar with mod chips, but nevertheless we would like to draw your attention to some important information.
Modification microchips (mod chips) circumvent the security embedded into Nintendo's products. To install a mod chip into a Nintendo hardware system, it is necessary to...

Didn't feel like standing in line for a Wii? No worries. Nintendo says they're ramping up production...
Nintendo's PR team send out an email announcing increased production:
"While shipments of Wii hardware are expected to grow this month due to increased production, demand for the system remains at unprecedented levels."

Buried in an IGN preview of the game comes word that the Wii-specific controls seem remarkably well put together. Once Harry's wand is drawn, you can then use the Remote to directly control the casting of spells, which can be cast quickly by the flick of the wrist.
By thrusting the Remote forward Potter will Force push an object away from him. Raising the Remote and Nunchuck upwards allows Potter to levitate an object. You can even move the Remote around while an object is in mid-air to reposition it.

Capcom's Japanese site has just posted a new Resident Evil 4: Biohazard trailer for the Nintendo Wii version of the game. The 2-minute video, which strangely has English audio, shows off the new point-and-shoot control scheme and a few choice scenes from the game. Even better, it ends with zombies attacking the player's living room! Let's hope the controls are half as engrossing when it hits Japan's stores in May. Click on the associated URL to see the trailer for yourself.

GamePro has a nice 'lil interview with Shigeru Miyamoto regarding his thoughts on the Wii so far. Here are some choice snippets:
"I prepared myself for the possibility that Wii might face an uphill battle in America, so to see that it has become this big of a hit is something I wasn't particularly expecting... There are other enhancements to the Wii interface and developments being planned that are going to really make games for hardcore players a lot more fun and interesting... A lot of people have the misunderstanding that Nintendo is not...

Finally, after more than 10 years of cross-platform rivalry, it looks like Sonic and Mario will get the chance to slug it out in the same game! Coming off years of speculation that the video game icons could clash in the next Super Smash Bros. title, it looks like competition between the plumber and the hedgehog will be much less fierce. That is, unless you consider table tennis a cut-throat sport. Get your Wii-motes and styluses primed and ready for "Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games".
Scheduled for release in late 2007, Mario & Sonic...
