In a triumph for innovation, the dual-screen Nintendo DS portable became America ’s top-selling video game system of any type in June, according to independent sales numbers just released by the NPD Group. Sales are now around 600,000 units. All I can say is, congrats, Nintendo. I hope the same success in innovation will come with the Wii.

In a recent retail product fair in Japan, Nintendo announced a microphone & headphone set for the DS. The peripheral is scheduled for release on September 14 for 1,200 Yen, which converts into about $10, €8 or £6. It’s designed for DS games supporting VoIP, like Metroid Prime: Hunters and the upcoming Pokemon Diamond & Pearl.
Also announced at the retail event were the DS Lite Jet Black for Japan on September 2, a Winning Eleven DS bundle on September 21, and a Crystal White limited edition Final Fantasy III DS bundle with Akihiko...

It’s official: Brett Martin has a metric buttload of video game memorabilia. By Mr. Martin’s own estimation, his collection clocks in at about ten to fifteen thousand individual pieces. But not all of those trinkets of molded plastic, cast metal, and fluffed polyester are depictions of Nintendo’s famous Italian plumber. His gaming nicknack collection actually spans a diverse range of characters from different franchises, companies, and eras.

Toys'R'Us in Australia are now taking pre-orders for the Wii at US$249, and that will include an unspecified free game! Could Nintendo be including Wii Sports as so many have speculated?
After contacting Toys'R'Us for comment, they have indeed confirmed that everyone will receive a free game with their Wii as part of the package, but they did not know which game this might be. Nintendo surprised President Bush with a DS Lite and a copy of Brain Age for his birthday. What are the chances he will use it?
It seems as though someone at Sports Illustrated Kids has gotten wind of the Nintendo Wii's launch date. The article also accurately reflects the PS3's launch date of November 17th (which has been OFFICIALLY announced.) Of course, this Wii launch date has not been made official by Nintendo yet. Could Sports Illustrated know something we don't?
