Suspect in PlayStation 3 Robbery Killed

A teenager accused of robbing a student of two new Playstation 3s on the day the popular game consoles were introduced was killed by police who had been sent to arrest him.

Peyton Strickland, 18, was killed Friday at a house he shared with three roommates, New Hanover County Sheriff Sid Causey said.

If this boy would've come to the door, opened the door, we probably wouldn't be talking," the sheriff said Sunday.

Roommate Mike Rhoton said Strickland was unarmed, but may have been holding a video game controller when he went to the door as it was bashed in by officers.

Arrest warrants alleged that Strickland, a student at Cape Fear Community College, and a University of North Carolina-Wilmington student stole two PlayStation units from another UNC-Wilmington student that day.

The sheriff said the robbery victim had waited three days in line to buy two Playstation 3 units for $641 each at a Wal-Mart. He was unloading the units at his campus apartment when one man beat him to the ground while another took the PlayStations, Causey said.

The sheriff said Strickland was shot by members of a a special police unit who went to help university officers serve warrants. He would not say why the special team was assisting.

Strickland's dog, a German shepherd, also was shot to death.

The State Bureau of Investigation is examining the case and three deputies on the team were placed on paid leave, Causey said.

The second man named in the warrants was arrested at another address and was released on bail on Saturday, authorities said.

The nationwide introduction of the Sony game system on Nov. 17 was marked by rowdy crowds and store stampedes. One buyer waiting in line at a Connecticut store was shot by armed robbers.

Most cops are good, I believe. However, this guy was unfit to wear a uniform. When you decide to be a police officer, you have chosen to enter a very risky profession. I believe that you must be willing, and in fact prefer to take a bullet yourself rather than shoot someone's unarmed teenaged son while he plays videogames in his own home. You don't get to go in guns ablazing and ask questions later. I think this cop deserves prison. I feel no pity for him. He chose to shoot first when in doubt and killed a kid. I'm generally a very forgiving person, but this guy hasn't acknowledged his responsibility and asked for forgiveness. Peyton is gone forever and I'd like to see this cop spend a good portion of his life thinking about this behind bars. God Bless Peyton and his family.

Yeah the story on this website blatantly left out information in regards to why the officer shot. They made it sound as if they opened the front door and just started shooting, which is not the case. The police yelled repeatedly for somebody to open the front door and nobody would, so they bashed it down with a battering ram. As the door was smashed in an officer mistook the sound of the collapsing door to be a gun shot, so he opened fired. I'm not defending the cop here, I'm just saying read more on the story and put yourself in that position before you start forming conclusions.

The Sheriff's Department had no business sending a SWAT team after a PlayStation thief. A young man has lost his life for no reason. Too bad they don't treat drug dealers with the same level of care!!! Not only did the officer shoot through a door and Kill Peyton, the grand jury in Wilmington NC did not charge the officer, by the way a wife of a deputy sheriff who worked with the accused officer sat on the grand jury that exonerated the officer of any wrong doing.... I say the officer should be charged with involuntary manslaughter and on federal charges... He should be serving a life imprisonment according to federal law. Six years earlier this same deputy fired on two teens driving a car because he feared they were going to run him over. He wounded one and critically wounded the other. Over the years I guess his aim has gotten a lot better. I am still baffled this has not made the national news. It appears this terrorist act by the Sherrif's department will go un-noticed by the nation. Too bad maybe we ought to send this story to Pravda or the Beirut Post, maybe .... hmmmm A sad day for America.

If Peyton and his friend had not assaulted (beat a kid with a pipe) then there would have been no reason for cops to go to his house. The ERT (Swat) team went because there are pictures circulating of these kids holding assault weapons. I cant believe that we live in a world where someone can assault someone steal over $1000 worth of goods and still be considered a good kid. I do not wish him dead, but if anyone didnt know he was due in court in Jan for another assault charge. Peyton was not a good kid. Think about if it was your kid that he robbed and put in the hospital.

Allegedly assault someone, Stu. Allegedly steal over $1000.
Read the Constitution. An accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of of law. Think about if your kid was accused of something and was executed without a trial.

First of all, most of you have no idea what thew hell you are takling about. Get the facts straight! Peyton was two feet away when he was ansering the door. The first shot which killed him went thru the door!! Then, the second shot went thru his chest not thru any other object. Plus, if he did it, give him a chance to go to court!!! And, the roommate who wasn't involved could have answered and he would be dead right now. For all of you heartless people out there please make sure you have the facts right before writing horible things. He was a dear friend of mine, and no way in hell did he deserve any of this! This is a very hard time for all his friends and family. Please don't read or believe everything the news says....half of it is not true!! Also, Mr. Stu Peyton was going to court for assault, but did you know he was being jumped by 4 guys and ended up breaking one of there jaws, and thats why he was going to court!!! Again, get all your facts straight!Mr Jordan, did you know the other cops didn't hear this same sound he heard, and after he shot Peyton ran out to the front yard screeming Oh Shit what did I Do! And Mr Brand, how do you know he stoll the playstation!? Exactly, you don't know what your talking about! Please stop being so ignorent! Thanks!

I guess that's what happens when you beat the shit out of an innocent person, steal his property, and then refuse to open your door to a heavily armed swat team that has been sent to arrest you.

It seems to me this kid wasn't all that good. Sounds like he had a thug image. Seems like he wanted to be part of the thug life. Well, he's THUG dead...I'm glad...I don't give a shit who knows. To the poster that said he was a dear friend...apparently wasn't friend enough to straigten his thug ass out. Death to all Thugs and Wugs (wanna be thugs).
